Numerous studies have been conducted across the country researching the effects, benefits and implications of Ignition Interlock Systems. To find out more about the findings of such studies, please review those listed below.

The Ignition Interlock System: An Evidentiary Tool Becomes a Sentencing Element

Alcohol Ignition Interlock Devices

In this study by the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety (ICADTS), a conglomeration of contributing authors and researchers from five countries combine their findings to display a broad view on the implications and effects of ignition interlock systems.

Among others, they found that “breath alcohol ignition interlock devices, when embedded in a comprehensive monitoring and service program, lead to 40-95% reductions in the rate of repeat DWI1 offenses of convicted DWI offenders.”

Alcohol Interlocks as a Condition of License Reinstatement

In a study conducted by The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF), authors Douglas J. Beirness and Herb M. Simpson research the background, participation rates and judiciary implications of the ignition interlock on license reinstatement.

TIRF explores the effects, potential benefits and subsequent guidelines of making ignition interlocks a mandatory factor for license reinstatement.
